Center Description

The ENT department of the University Clinic Würzburg is one of the best known and largest ENT clinics in Germany. The international reputation of the clinic is based on the work of the "father of microsurgery in the ear", Prof. Horst Wullstein, who implemented the concept of an encompassing head clinic in 1970. This interdisciplinary collaboration between faculties (besides the ear, nose and throat medicine: ophthalmology, neurosurgery, neurology, neuroradiology, radiotherapy) has proven itself to be optimal for patient care.

In addition to the clinic’ original focus of middle ear surgery, today patients from all over Germany and from abroad come to Würzburg where all relevant surgical solutions have been established and advanced over the last few decades. Today, the clinic plays a leading role in patient care, research and education in Germany. In addition to the Cochlear Implant Center, the center features the department of Phoniatrics and Pedaudiology, the Allergy Department and the Sleep laboratory.

The interdisciplinary care of patients includes all areas of skull based surgery, traumatology and the plastic-reconstructive surgery. The close interaction between clinic and research in-house makes it possible to convert the latest findings into clinical practice. The clinic is headed by Professor Dr. Rudolf Hagen, who was appointed to the chair in 2005. For many ENT doctors, Würzburg is the "Mecca of ENT". For this reason, many foreign doctors visit the clinic to deepen their knowledge of the field. Our established supra-regional training courses are always attended by a large number of ENT doctors from all over the world.

Our latest development is the establishment of a Comprehensive Hearing Center, CHC.
The CHC is an interdisciplinary, integrative diagnostics, counselling and research center dedicated to “hearing”.

The CHC provides comprehensive advice on all current diagnostic methods and treatment options to persons with hearing impairments and their families.
